Kenmark Scenic Backdrops offers a Scenic Painting Internship Program that is focused on creating opportunities for collaborative relationships with college-aged students and Kenmark’s experienced Scenic Artists. This program uses a combination of hands-on experience, professional training and mentorships to advance students to the skills required to become the next generation scenic artists and designers. We are committed to encouraging and guiding students through the transition from student to professional and tailor each internship experience to the current needs of our organization and to the experience and objectives of the intern.
All Scenic Painting Interns will be provided with hands-on, real world experience in a professional paint studio. Interns will be full members of the team under the leadership and guidance of Susan Crabtree, Master Scenic Artist and co-author of “Scenic Art for the Theatre”. Kenmark’s staff will provide each intern with training, guidance, and professional knowledge. In addition, interns receive instruction in drawing and special instruction in areas of scenic artistry they and the Kenmark supervisor deem need further development.
For over 32 years, Kenmark has been one of the premier backdrop rental companies. We paint and design specifically for the stage, specializing in theatre and dance. We utilize experienced scenic designers with theatrical backgrounds from Broadway to professional ballet. Our Scenic Artists are all professionally seasoned painters.
This is an excellent opportunity for a college junior, senior or graduate student to work with a thriving arts company in a way that other internships do not offer. Interns are expected to commit 40 hours a week to working on all phases of backdrop creation, including sizing, creating a pounce, cartooning, mixing paint and painting from a rendering. All interns must be willing to commit to a minimum of two months with the maximum being three months. This is a paid position, but out of town students are responsible for providing their own housing. Kenmark’s staff will try to assist with identifying possible temporary rental units for out-of-state interns.
